This edited volume comprises a collection of chapters that explore the notion of marginality and potential freedom therefrom in contemporary Japan and interrogate\u00a0widely accepted societal norms. As the myth of Japan\u2019s homogeneity became the<\/span>subject of vigorous academic debates during the 1980s and 1990s, the notion of\u00a0<\/span>diversity in Japan was framed in conjunction with the embodied dichotomy between\u00a0<\/span>the Japanese majority and ethnic minorities. Increased numbers of foreign workers\u00a0<\/span>in the country\u2019s workforce, the practical issues faced by municipalities, and\u00a0<\/span>international pressure on the national government to accommodate diversity all\u00a0<\/span>prompted the state to devise its master narrative on tayousei (diversity) in a targeted\u00a0<\/span>effort to increase societal awareness of ethnic minorities at the community level and\u00a0<\/span>encourage coexistence or foster minorities\u2019 rights within the legal infrastructure\u00a0<\/span>framework. Governmental offices, for instance, periodically highlight their attempts to\u00a0<\/span>adapt to diversifying society in terms of \u2018multicultural coexistence, \u2018inclusivity\u2019,\u00a0<\/span>\u2018diversity with respect to gender and sexuality\u2019, and, more recently, \u2018neurodivergence\u2019\u00a0<\/span>in the educational realm; however, diversity is continuously positioned vis \u00e0-vis\u00a0<\/span>monolithic normative values and as \u2018something to cope with\u2019 while maintaining the\u00a0<\/span>existing structure. As Japanese society witnesses increasing diversity and\u00a0<\/span>fragmentation, the imposition of idealised norms causes many individuals to\u00a0<\/span>experience ikizurasa \u2013 a sense of alienation from the \u2018ordinary\u2019 \u2013 futsu \u2013 without an\u00a0<\/span>apparent cause or ibasho ga nai \u2013 \u2018a sense of being out of place, out of sorts,\u00a0<\/span>disconnected\u2019 (Allison 2013, 14). Accordingly, research on individuals who feel\u00a0<\/span>marginalised, including those who may be conventionally categorised as the\u00a0<\/span>majority, remains scant. Thus, this volume approaches marginality as a catalytic\u00a0<\/span>driving force to glimpse an alternative future in Japan by deconstructing marginality\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>perceived inherent deficiency. To this end, the chapters that follow address several\u00a0<\/span>issues relating to marginality by applying ethnographic and interview methods to\u00a0<\/span>access actual cases that prompt an interrogation of existing normative practices.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
